Boogaard won't distract us: Adelaide Utd

Winless Adelaide United enter Sunday's A-League clash against a Newcastle Jets team featuring their former defender Nigel Boogard.

Adelaide United know what to expect when their former defender Nigel Boogaard returns in Newcastle colours for Sunday's A-League game.

Lip. And plenty of it.

The Reds expect Newcastle's new captain Boogaard to try and suck them in with his renowned sledging in the Coopers Stadium fixture.

"Yeah he probably will with a few of the players," United winger Craig Goodwin said of Boogaard's sledging.

"You have to just be professional. You can give as bit back to him but at the right time.

"There is always those little bits (in games) where you are trying to put people off their game.

"I'd say we would just focus on ourselves.

"We're in a situation where we want to be switched on 100 per cent of the time and do our job in every moment of the match."

Boogaard departed Adelaide at the end of last season and his absence in the central defensive post has been felt by the winless Reds, who have conceded 14 goals in their past four games - all defeats.

In contrast, Boogaard's Jets are in fifth spot after six rounds.

"We know what they're like," said Goodwin, who played 44 games for Newcastle before crossing to Adelaide in 2014.

"They have obviously recruited some good players and Boogaard is there now, so they will be a tough game for us."

Adelaide, with two draws and four losses, welcome back captain and goalkeeper Eugene Galekovic for the encounter.

STATS THAT MATTER

* The last time the Jets travelled to Adelaide, in January, the Reds smashed them 7-0.

* No player has had more goal assists this season than Newcastle's David Carney (three)

* Newcastle have faced 98 shots this season, a league high.
