Book about filtered water actually filters water

Scientists in the United States have developed a book that can save lives by making polluted water safe to consume. Once readers are finished, they can filter water through the pages they've just read.

The Drinkable Book

The Drinkable Book is both a water filter and an instruction manual for how and why to clean drinking water. This technology (pAge drinking paper) uses a thick, sturdy sheet of paper embedded with silver nanoparticles, which are lethal for microbes. (drinkablebook.tilt.com) Source: drinkablebook.tilt.com

It's an invention that could potentially save millions of lives - a book about filtered water that actally filters water.

Scientists in the United States presented their creation at the American Chemical Society's 250th national meeting in Boston.

Inside the book are printed instructions directing readers to tear out a page, insert it in a filter holder and pour unclean water through it.

Once the water passes through the page, which is treated with treated with silver or copper, any bacteria in the unclean water will be absorbed by the page.

The process can remove almost all bacteria in the unclean water, the BBC reports.

Each sheet can be used several times - cleaning up to 100 litres of water.

One book could filter one persons water supply for four years.

According to the United Nations, more than 750 million people around the world lack access to safe drinking water and up to four million people die annually from water-related diseases.
