Boondall firming for Horn-Pacquiao rematch

The Brisbane Entertainment Centre is firming as the venue for Jeff Horn and Manny Pacquiao's rematch but it could move interstate if the numbers don't add up.

Jeff Horn's mooted rematch against Manny Pacquiao will be staged interstate if the numbers can't be made to stack up at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre.

But promoter Dean Lonergan has stressed his loyalty to his "friends" in Queensland, saying he does not want a bidding war with other states over the new WBO welterweight champion's next fight.

With Pacquiao yet to decide if he will continue his boxing career, there is no guarantee there will be a rematch - but if there is, it almost certainly won't happen at Suncorp Stadium, which played host to the original July 2 bout.

Lonergan said it was "too risky" to fight outdoors in Brisbane in November, Pacquiao's next available date, because of weather factors.

That has raised the prospect of the Brisbane Entertainment Centre in Boondall as an alternative.

The indoor arena has a capacity of only 14,500 compared to Suncorp's 52,500, which means ticket prices would be increased to make up for the shortfall in attendance.

"First Manny's got to say yes, and secondly, a case has to be made to make it work at Boondall or another venue," Lonergan told AAP.

"Who knows what happens after that.

"If you look at Mayweather versus Pacquaio - the highest-grossing fight of all time in boxing - it did $72 million in a 15,000-seat venue.

"It's a case of supply and demand. If it can be made to stack up at Boondall I think that's a real option.

"If it can't, then we'll just have a look around."

Melbourne's Etihad Stadium, which has a retractable roof and can accommodate 56,347 spectators, has been discussed as a possible interstate option.

A record crowd packed into the Docklands venue two years ago for UFC 193, showing there is a huge market for combat sports in Victoria.

However, Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said earlier this month she would ensure any Pacquiao-Horn rematch would happen in her state.

"Contractually, we've got to give them first rights but I also think it's the right thing to do, to work through all options to try and get the fight in Queensland," Lonergan said.
