Boris Johnson, the flamboyant former London Mayor and leader of the ‘Vote Leave’ campaign during the EU Referendum, has just been appointed Britain’s Foreign Secretary – a move which has raised eyebrows in foreign ministries around the world.
The politician – briefly favoured to be the next Prime Minister after David Cameron resigned in the wake of the Brexit vote – has taken the job as top diplomat despite little ministerial or diplomatic experience.
Until today, his most recent (un)diplomatic foray was a limerick he wrote about the Turkish President which won an offensive poem competition.
"There was a young fellow from Ankara, who was a terrific wankerer. Till he sowed his wild oats, with the help of a goat, but he didn't even stop to thank-era."
US State Department spokesperson Mark Toner struggled (and failed) to suppress a smile when he was told of Johnson's appointment.
