Bowen lampoons Sukkar for housing tip

Shadow treasurer Chris Bowen has slammed the Turnbull government for 'stupid thought bubbles' about housing affordability.

Federal Labor has lampooned a Turnbull government minister for advising young people wanting to buy a house to get a "highly paid job".

Michael Sukkar, who was recently appointed assistant minister to the treasurer with responsibility for housing affordability, said it wasn't the only answer but a "first step to buying a house".

It echoes the view of former treasurer Joe Hockey, who told home seekers in 2015 to "get a good job".

A year later, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull was telling rich parents to "shell out" for their children's first home, while earlier this year Deputy Prime Minster Barnaby was urging people to move to the bush for a better housing deal rather than pursuing a view of the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

"You could not make this stuff up," shadow treasurer Chris Bowen said in a statement on Tuesday.
