Late British pop star David Bowie's private collection of paintings and sculptures has been sold for STG31.5 million ($A52.5 million) at Sotheby's auction house in London.

The two-day auction, which ended on Friday afternoon, included 356 works of art that belonged to the "king of glam rock".

The priciest item, Air Power, a work by US artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, fetched STG7.1 million.

Another of Basquiat's paintings up for bid in the auction - an untitled work in which the artist's trademark yellow crown makes an appearance - was sold for STG2.3 million, or more than double its estimated value.

In 1996, Bowie played the role of Andy Warhol in Basquiat, a biopic about the outlandish life of the neo expressionist artist.

Other items that raked in large sums were Head of Gerda Boehm, a portrait by British artist Frank Auerbach that was sold for STG3.7 million, while Peter Lanyon's Witness and Trevalgan fetched STG797,000 and STG305,000, respectively.

Henry Moore's "Family Group" was the most sought-after sculpture, fetching STG581,000, while Scottish artist's William Turnbull's sculpture Large Idol was sold for STG317,000.

Prior to the auction, the entire collection was exhibited for 10 days at Sotheby's auction house in London under the title Bowie/Collector.
