Boxer Kaye Scott to go for gold in champs

Australian amateur boxer Kaye Scott could become Australia's first ever amateur world champion if she beats reigning champ Yang Xiaoli of China on Friday.

Australian amateur boxer Kaye Scott has fought her way through to the final of the Women's World Championship after a come-from-behind win against Turkey's Elif Guneri in Kazakhstan.

She will become Australia's first ever amateur world champion if she beats reigning champion Yang Xiaoli of China for the gold medal on Friday night.

On Thursday Scott was behind after the first two rounds of the 81kg bout, with Guneri, the reigning world championship bronze medallist, looking in control.

Scott started to find her range in the third round, but was not sure how far behind she was going into the final two minutes.

"I actually had no idea," she said.

"Coach was quite positive to me in the corner, and I had direct instructions that I was trying to execute, so that's what I was focusing on."

Australia's best ever performances at an elite world championship previously have been three bronze medals in the men, and one bronze medal in the women.

"I'm so happy, still kind of in disbelief," Scott said after her win.

"At the end I knew it was close, but I was reasonably confident that I had the cleaner shots landed."

Scott narrowly lost out to Perth teenager Caitlyn Parker for the right to box for Australia in the Olympic 75kg category.

Earlier Queensland's Skye Nicolson won bronze in the women's 64kg division, losing her semi-final bout to China's Yang Wenlu in a points decision.

With Australia guaranteed at least a silver and a bronze, it will be the country's most successful Women's World Championships ever.
