Boxing Day sales hit Western Sydney

The NSW Treasurer says major changes to Boxing Day retail trading laws will pump more money into local economies.

Western Sydney shoppers will be among the biggest winners in a major shake-up of Boxing Day trading laws, the NSW Treasurer says.

All retailers across NSW will be able to open their doors this Boxing Day, where previously only stores in the CBD and tourist precincts were allowed to trade.

Treasurer Gladys Berejiklian said the changes would save shoppers from schlepping across the state and pump more money into local economies.

"Bargain hunters across Western Sydney and regional NSW will finally have the option of shopping closer to home today," she said.

"This means local dollars being spent in local stores which is a welcome boost to businesses right across the state."

However, the treasurer said all employees working on Boxing Day must freely choose to do so.

Ms Berejilian warned employers they risked mammoth fines if caught coercing their employees.

Shopkeepers cannot be forced to open their doors on Boxing Day if they'd prefer to keep them shut, Ms Berejilian said.
