Boy, 8, missing overnight in Cairns

Police hold concerns for an eight-year-old boy who went missing from his Cairns home on Friday night.

Police have begun searching for an eight-year-old boy who went missing from his Cairns home on Friday night.

The boy, who hasn't been named, was last seen some time before 6pm (AEST) on Friday at his home in the northern suburb of Smithfield.

A police spokeswoman told AAP search teams began looking for the boy in the Smithfield area on Saturday morning.

He is believed to be on his own.

The boy is Papua New Guinean, about 150 centimetres tall and is believed to be wearing green pyjamas.

His family hold concerns for his safety as he has a medical condition.
