A three-year-old Sydney boy has died after two cars collided and one then struck him as he stood on a footpath with his father.

The boys suffered critical injuries in the crash on Lumley Street, Granville on Tuesday evening.

Paramedics performed CPR before taking him to The Children's Hospital at Westmead where he later died.

His father was not injured in the crash.

A male driver and female passenger from one of the cars were treated by paramedics at the scene, while the male driver of the second car was taken to Westmead Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Both will undergo mandatory blood and urine testing.

Lumley Street between William Street and Mary Street is expected to remain closed for some time as specialist forensic officers examine the scene.
