An 11-year-old boy has died after being shot in a hunting accident in a remote New Zealand forest.

An 11-year-old boy has been killed in a hunting incident in a remote New Zealand forest.

Connor Brian Phillips from Reporoa, south of Rotorua died on Sunday after a gun when off while being unloaded by an adult hunter.

Emergency services were called out to the Kaingaroa Forest at about 1.30pm but the boy died at the scene.

Police had confirmed someone died in the remote area on Sunday but did not provide any further information.

They will on Monday carry out a post-mortem and are speaking to a number of people about the incident.
