Shoppers and workers were shocked by the violent scene as what appeared to be two opposing groups of young men brawled in Melbourne CBD.

A teenage boy is recovering after he was injured in a street brawl in Melbourne's CBD involving about 30 people, some with weapons.

The 16-year-old was injured in the fight that erupted near the entrance to the Target Centre on Bourke Street about 7.30pm on Friday.

Shoppers and CBD workers were shocked by the violent scene as what appeared to be two opposing groups of young men brawled.

A number of weapons were produced during the fight, including batons and sticks, police said.

Police rushed to the scene to break up the fight using capsicum spray.

The 16-year-old boy was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and authorities said he is recovering well.

Police believe the two groups were known to each other.

No arrests have yet been made and police are calling for witnesses as their investigation continues.
