A young boy is recovering in a Sydney hospital after surviving a brutally violent dog attack on the NSW south coast.
The youngster's mother has given a harrowing account of the moment a vicious bull arab went "in for the kill" and attacked her two-year-old son.
The boy, Jayden, was bitten a number of times in the front yard of an East Nowra home at about 4pm on Sunday and suffered puncture wounds to his head, chest, back and legs.
Melissa Laynes, Jayden's mother, says she tried with all her might to rip the dog's jaws open as it latched on to her son.
"I got him off for a moment and it was just in for the kill. It got nudged under me and I was just screaming, Jayden was screaming and it was horrible," she told the Seven Network.
"And then he went in again and got hold of him again. I was getting dragged over, like, he had that much force on my son. It was just horrible."
Jayden is in a stable condition at Westmead Children's Hospital.
The dog has been seized and its owner is set to be interviewed by police.
No decision has yet been made on the dog's future or possible penalties over the attack.
