Ageless wrist spinner Brad Hogg's refusal to be pushed into retirement was the driving force behind his shock BBL switch to the Melbourne Renegades.
Hogg, 45, was a hugely popular figure with the Perth Scorchers for the first five editions of the BBL but was unveiled as the Renegades' latest signing in Melbourne on Monday.
Scorchers coach Justin Langer spoke of his shock and disappointment at Hogg's decision last week, but the evergreen spinner says he gave both Langer and the franchise fair warning.
"He's always been telling me I should be retiring on a high and he was pretty excessive about that this year ... I told him that I wanted to play on," Hogg said of Langer.
"I've retired once before and you don't win any brownie points for retiring.
"Over the last three months I've been pretty open with him that other teams have been wanting me - there's been a couple of teams chasing me for the last three years - but this year was the first time that I've been pretty open with JL that I might be making a move.
"I gave them three months' warning. We set the time, we went through the appropriate guidelines to tell them what was going on, gave them a date and they were pretty blase about the whole process, so I took that as it was time for me to go."
Hogg, who has known Langer since their school days, said the friction between him and his old mate over the decision would be water off a duck's back in a day or two.
In any case, Hogg, who was part of the Scorchers' back-to-back BBL title-winning teams, said it was time for Perth's younger spinners to be given greater opportunities.
"I've had 23 great years with the WACA and if you look at it they've got Ashton Agar, James Muirhead and Ashton Turner," he said.
"These guys have got to get the opportunities and I still want to play cricket and I've got an opportunity here at the Renegades ... as far as I'm concerned it's a win-win situation."
BBL06 kicks off on December 20 with a Sydney derby between reigning champions Thunder, and the Sixers.
Hogg will line up for the Renegades against his old side for the first time on Thursday, December 29 at Etihad Stadium.
