Brain family 'on knife-edge', still optimistic

An Australian family who’ve settled in Scotland and are facing deportation from the British Home Office say they’ve been humbled by the support they’ve received and are cautiously optimistic about a potential job offer.

An Australian family battling to remain in the UK say they are still waiting to hear back after being approached over a possible job offer.

Gregg and Kathryn Brain are fighting to secure employment that would meet Home Office visa requirements and allow them to avoid deportation.

Mr Brain said the family had been approached by a "major Scottish employer" with a possible solution to their predicament, but they’re yet to hear confirmation of the offer.

“It’s possible that they’ve decided that there’s nothing more they can do,” Mr Brain told SBS.

Mr Brain told SBS the family had also received another job offer from an employer who would be interested in assisting the family.

“There are calls for cautious optimism,” Mr Brain said.

The family moved from Australia to Dingwall in the Scottish Highlands with their son Lachlan in 2011 on Mrs Brain's student visa.

A two-year post-study visa scheme then on offer was later withdrawn and the Brains had been given until August 1 to find a job that would meet the specifications for a UK tier two visa.

“This sort of knife edge is what we’ve been living on for months, so at this stage we’re not doing too badly,” Mr Brain told SBS.

“We’ve got an enormous amount of support which is humbling.

On Wednesday, the Home Office confirmed their leave to remain would not be extended further and urged the family to leave the UK voluntarily.
