Attorney-General George Brandis is supporting retiring Human Rights Commissioner Tim Wilson in his bid to be selected as the Liberal candidate in the Victorian seat of Goldstein.

Senator Brandis has written a letter supporting his endorsement, telling Sky News on Sunday Mr Wilson would be a "huge asset" to the parliament.

Last month former Victorian premier Jeff Kennett threw his weight behind Georgina Downer, the daughter of former foreign minister Alexander Downer, to stand in the seat held by outgoing minister Andrew Robb.
