Break-up won't affect swim team: coach

Australian swimming coach Jacco Verhaeren is confident teammates Mitch Larkin and Emily Seebohm's split won't affect the Dolphins at the Pan Pacs.

The fallout over Mitch Larkin's relationship break-up with fellow Australian swimming star Emily Seebohm has been messy, to say the least.

But Dolphins head coach Jacco Verhaeren is confident nothing will affect national team harmony at the upcoming Pan Pacs in Japan.

World backstroke champion Seebohm only joined the Dolphins on Wednesday with three days of their two week Cairns camp remaining after she announced via social media that she had ended her two-year romance with Larkin.

Former dual world champ Larkin has also tried to keep a low profile in Cairns, brushing a major team appearance to raise awareness for the health of the Great Barrier Reef.

Seebohm has posted cryptic social media messages since the split, seen as thinly-veiled swipes at Larkin.

But Verhaeren predicted there would not be a toxic team atmosphere at the Pan Pacs where they will line up against the might of world No.1 the United States in Tokyo from August 9.

"Absolutely. This team is very strong. Every athlete, including Mitch and Emily, are very professional," Verhaeren said.

"They are both committed to achieving their dreams and hopes; nothing gets in the way of that."

A News Corp report claimed Larkin caused the split by having an affair.

Seebohm has posted on social media that her delayed arrival at the Cairns camp was due to medical concerns for her beloved pet horse Platinum, not the break-up.

Verhaeren said he had no concerns about Seebohm's mindset before the Pan Pacs.

"Her training has been ongoing and almost uninterrupted, not here but in her own environment (in Brisbane)," he said.

"She arrived on Wednesday and we had a good chat. From there she's been training very well and settling into the team.

"There is no difference to any other circumstances so I am very happy with that.

"She is a most respected team member, been making teams for more than 10 years now, so she knows what is happening."

Asked about Larkin's well being, Verhaeren said: "We keep private matters private and external matters external.

"We are just focusing on training. It is as per usual at the moment."

The 33-strong Dolphins team leaves Cairns on Saturday for another camp in Nagaoka, Japan before the Pan Pacs from August 9-14.

The near month-long lead-up will be identical to their Tokyo Olympic preparation.
