Breakers get NBL revenge on Melbourne

The New Zealand Breakers, led by Corey Webster's 39 points, have gained revenge over Melbourne United with an 80-69 win in Auckland.

Corey Webster has hit a career-high 39 points with the New Zealand Breakers getting the payback they were seeking by downing NBL leaders Melbourne United 80-69 in Auckland.

The win on Sunday came two weeks after the defending champions' contentious 87-86 defeat in Melbourne, after which the NBL apologised for a crucial late unsportsmanlike call against Webster.

It was Webster who led the Breakers' big fourth-quarter effort at Vector Arena with a quick pair of three-pointers that put the home side into a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

The guard landed two more from downtown to finish with an impressive seven-from-nine from beyond the arc.

Point guard Cedric Jackson was the only other Breaker into double figures in scoring with 10 points and he also collected nine boards.

One concern for the home side was their lack of accuracy from the free-throw line, where they landed just 12 of 22 attempts.

For Melbourne, Chris Goulding top-scored with 19 points, while Stephen Holt added 17 and Daniel Kickert 13.

The Breakers have now won six of their past seven matches to go to 7-4 for the season and consolidate their spot in the top three.

United remain top of the table but have dropped their last three after a 9-0 start.

The teams were neck and neck for the first three quarters, which featured some tight defence.

Webster stamped his mark early with 14 first-quarter points, including sinking his first five shots from the field.

However, he went cold over the middle portion of the contest before finding his range again late in the third quarter.

Melbourne headed into the final quarter up 52-51 but couldn't keep pace as the Breakers lifted a gear.
