Breakers seek 2nd Kings NBL win in a week

The New Zealand Breakers are looking to beat the Sydney Kings for the second time in six days in their NBL clash in Auckland.

After drawing first blood, the rematch.

Just six days separates the New Zealand Breakers' last-gasp NBL win over Sydney and Thursday's repeat clash, again in Auckland.

For the Breakers, it offers the chance to dispatch a genuine NBL contender twice in a week and assert their own title credentials.

For the Kings, it's the perfect opportunity for vengeance.

New Breakers import DJ Newbill nailed the buzzer-beating shot last Friday to hand his side an 87-85 win.

With red-hot veteran Kirk Penney dragging Kings defenders wide, combo guard Newbill was freed to drift left and score with barely a second remaining.

"I said to Edgar Sosa, this is like the playoffs," Newbill said.

"Most of the time, the only time you play a team back-to-back is in the playoffs, but I think this will be good for us.

"It's a chance to go back to the film and make some changes, and see what we did good and what we can do better in the next game."

Having laboured to a first-up loss to bogey side Cairns, the Breakers head into Thursday's match hoping their Sydney win wasn't a flash in the pan.

Newbill and fellow import Sosa have hit the ground running, while Penney bounced back from a stomach bug to star against the Kings.

They'll also be aided by the absence of Sydney skipper Kevin Lisch, who suffered a serious calf injury in Sunday's 103-87 win over Illawarra.

American Jeremy Kendle has been signed as emergency cover.

But Newbill didn't expect the loss of Lisch to have too much of an impact, with Jason Cadee available to run the Kings' point.

"When one guy goes down, the next guy steps up and says this is my opportunity to shine," the 25-year-old Newbill said.
