Breakthrough in Vic burnt car murder

Victoria Police think they're close to solving the murder of Thomas O'Connell after a public appeal for information helped them identify a car.

Dashboard camera footage could help police solve the murder of Thomas O'Connell, whose body was found in a burnt-out car in Victoria.

Homicide detectives are trawling through hours of footage after identifying a car they think will lead them to the person responsible for the murder.

Following an appeal for information on Monday, Detective Senior Sergeant Stuart Bailey believes a grey 2008 Honda Civic four-door sedan - seen travelling behind Mr O'Connell's white 2011 Kia Cerato hatch - is directly linked to his death.

"This may be the breakthrough detectives need to ultimately solve the case," Det Sen Sgt Bailey said on Tuesday.

Mr O'Connell, 32, of Mernda, was found dead inside a charred car just off the Hume Freeway in Wandong on February 5.

The last known sighting of him alive was at 10.40pm in Mernda the night before his body was discovered.
