Brett Deledio inches closer to AFL return

Greater Western Sydney's Brett Deledio won't return for at least three weeks, but coach Leon Cameron says the AFL veteran's recent progress has been pleasing.

Greater Western Sydney's star recruit Brett Deledio has taken significant strides in his recovery from a chronic calf injury but an AFL return remains at least three weeks away.

Former Richmond playmaker Deledio is yet to play for the Giants since joining the expansion club in last year's trade period.

The 30-year-old suffered an injury in February then a setback the following month.

The Giants will continue to adopt a conservative approach with Deledio, whose final two seasons at Punt Rd were interrupted by a series of calf injuries.

However, there was a lot for coach Leon Cameron to like at training in Sydney throughout this week.

"He did a lot of running on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and did a bit of ball work," the coach said on Friday.

"But he has to train with the group fully for three weeks (before playing a game) and he hasn't done that yet.

"He's done a fair bit with the rehab guys and he's actually chugging along really well, so if you add that up - he's at least three or four weeks away.

"We're in it for the long haul and I've got to make sure he's right to play footy, not right to play for one week then get injured the next week."
