Brexit drives German diplomats to drink

Germany's Foreign Ministry has joked on Twitter that the dismay caused by the Brexit vote has led them to head to an Irish pub to get drunk.

Dismayed by the British vote to leave the European Union, the German Foreign Ministry took to Twitter to make the following announcement: "We are off now to an Irish pub to get decently drunk."

"From tomorrow on we will again work for a better Europe! Promised!" ended the tweet on Friday, which has since been shared more than 5600 times.

The wisecrack came after several very sober posts on Friday about the importance of European unity in the wake of Britain's vote to leave the 28-nation bloc.

The ministry also changed its profile picture to the blue and gold EU flag.

After a night supposedly spent drowning their sorrows, on Saturday the ministry's staffers hosted a post-Brexit meeting in Berlin of foreign ministers from the founding EU states: France, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany.

Despite being a fan of their pubs, Germany didn't invite Ireland.

The country is not an original member of the union.

"Keeping our promise and working for a better Europe by preparing a ForMin meeting. Aspirin helps, though," the ministry joked on Twitter early on Saturday.
