Brisbane-based troops bound for Iraq

Defence says the next deployment of 300 military trainers to Iraq will largely come from Brisbane's 7th Brigade.

The Army's 7th Brigade, based in Brisbane, will provide most of the troops for the latest training mission to Iraq.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott on Tuesday announced 300 troops would serve with a New Zealand force to train Iraqi soldiers in the fight against Islamic State.

Defence confirmed on Wednesday most of the troops would come from Brisbane's 7th Brigade and be deployed in May.

The 7th Brigade has a long history of operating alongside NZ forces, having seen action at Gallipoli in World War I.

The training team, based at Taji north of Baghdad, will include infantry, cavalry, logistic, communication and medical personnel.

Their role will be to train the Iraqi Security Forces in conducting independent combat operations against IS.
