Brisbane couple charged with keeping slave

A Brisbane couple have been charged with keeping a woman as a slave for the last eight years

A man and a woman from Brisbane have been charged with human trafficking, after allegedly keeping a woman as a slave for eight years.

Australian Federal Police allege the pair, from Brisbane suburb the Gap, forced the 42-year-old woman into domestic servitude after bringing her from Fiji.

The AFP was tipped off in August last year by the Salvation Army, leading to the 56-year-old man and 46-year-old woman being charged with multiple offences, including human trafficking and keeping a person in servitude.

They are scheduled to appear before the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Friday.

AFP Commander Lesa Gale said the case highlighted the reality that human trafficking can and does still occur even in countries like Australia.

"There are people in our community who are being exploited today and the Australian community needs to be aware human trafficking can happen anywhere," Commander Gale said in a statement.

"We want victims to know that there is a way out of these terrible situations for them, and that we can help,"
