The Brisbane Heat have stayed in touch for a top two spot in the Women's Big Bash League, beating the Perth Scorchers by five wickets at Perth Stadium.

Having restricted the Scorchers to 5-136 after the home team's flying start, the Heat timed their chase to perfection to score the winning runs with four balls left, for their fifth win of the season.

The Scorchers were left clinging to fourth position, with four wins and five losses.

The WBBL Boxing Day clash took place after the men's BBL game earlier that saw the Scorchers beat the Adelaide Strikers.

Almost 20,000 people were still watching on as the WBBL game got under way just after 7pm.

The Scorchers batted first and got off to a flier with 50 in the first six overs, as Meg Lanning batted her way to a classy 70 from 56 balls, including seven fours and two sixes.

She had good support from Elyse Villani (23 from 20), Amy Jones (14 from 13) and later Lauren Ebsary (12 not out from 14).

But the Heat did well to restrict Perth to 5-136.

Haidee Birkett starred with the ball for the Heat, claiming 3-19 in four overs with Jemma Barsby the other wicket-taker.

Sammy-Jo Johnson (0-21) and Delissa Kimmince (0-20) both went for under a run a ball.

While Brisbane lost no early wickets, they had trouble building momentum.

Grace Harris was dropped twice to high balls but struggled to 27 from 29 balls.

Beth Mooney looked threatening with 35 off 28 before falling to a brilliant caught and bowled by offspinner Emma King.

The run chase remained tight until Jess Jonassen (28 from 26) and Laura Harris (six from two) saw the Heat home with four balls remaining.
