Brisbane limp into W-League finals

Brisbane Roar have narrowly held on to the last remaining W-League semi-final berth in underwhelming fashion with a scoreless draw against Newcastle.

Brisbane have snuck into the W-League semi-finals after holding on for a scoreless draw against Newcastle.

The Jets dominated goalscoring opportunities at Hunter Stadium on Sunday yet rarely looked convincing in their quest to collect the two-goal victory needed to leapfrog the Roar.

They again seemed to struggle for confidence in front of goal, reflective of a season which has only produced nine goals in 12 matches.

Georgia Yeoman-Dale and Jenna Kingsley both failed to convert with only the goalkeeper to beat among a host of other missed opportunities.

The Roar weren't without their chances either with, most notably, Amy Chapman denied a first-half goal after she narrowly strayed offside.

Five-time grand finalists Brisbane now face a mammoth task when they tackle runaway leaders Melbourne City.

The Roar will have to do so without the services of key midfielder Katrina Gorry who will be suspended after accumulating four cautions.

The Matildas ace also was highly fortunate not to be sent off for a second yellow card early in the second half against the Jets following a reckless tackle from behind.

"We knew it was going to be a tough game but we defended really well and just lacked a little quality in the final third," said Roar captain Clare Polkinghorne.

"We have built up nicely over the course of the season and everyone is gelling together and starting to perform."

On Saturday, Melbourne City became the first side to go through a W-League season with a perfect record thanks to a 2-1 win over Sydney FC.

Nevertheless, it took a late winner from Marianna Tabain five minutes from time to ensure City made it 12 wins from as many outings.

Sydney FC will tackle Canberra United next Sunday in the nation's capital, with City to host Roar 24 hours later.

Canberra saw their seven-match winning run come to a halt on Friday when they could only draw 1-1 against Adelaide United.

Western Sydney Wanderers ended the season on a high as late goals secured a 2-0 win over last season's premiers Perth Glory.
