Brisbane to mark Victory in Europe Day

Australia's only Victory in Europe Day commemoration will be held in Brisbane on Saturday.

Seventy-three years ago allied forces in Europe celebrated the end of the world's deadliest war following Germany's surrender in May 1945.

To mark Australia's role in World War II, the 73rd anniversary of Victoria in Europe (VE) Day - on May 8, 1945 - will be held in Brisbane at New Farm's Allies Memorial on Saturday.

RSL Queensland South Eastern District president Wendy Taylor said Brisbane's commemoration is the only service in Australia.

"Even if it was far from us, it's likely somebody from our family was there," Ms Taylor told AAP.

"It's about showing respect to our allies, and to other countries.'"

She said those with English, French, Polish and other European backgrounds were set to attend along with a number of local dignitaries.

There will be a wreath-laying ceremony followed by an official service with guest speaker Major-General Professor John Pearn, a former surgeon-general of the Australian Defence Force.

VE Day was the public holiday celebrated on May 8, 1945 to mark the end of World War II in Europe.
