England Test paceman Stuart Broad has notched up his first Big Bash League wickets but he couldn't save the Hobart Hurricanes from sinking to a home-ground loss.
Broad took 2-35 during Monday night's seven-wicket loss to Melbourne Stars at Bellerive Oval, in just his second appearance in purple and skipper Tim Paine said the international is proving valuable .
"He's great. He's an international captain, or he has been, so to have him out there is excellent," Paine said of Broad's leadership and team involvement.
"But we were disappointed with the way we bowled."
Opening for Hobart, Paine finished with a BBL personal best 91 runs, surviving the loss of early, cheap wickets - D'Arcy Short (0), Dom Michael (0) and Kumar Sangakkara (15) - and helping the hosts to 4-188.
"If you're two (wickets) down in the second over it's normally a bit of a battle," Paine conceded.
"We're pleased, from where we were, to get to 188 and have ourselves in the game, but if we had started better that 188 turns into 200-plus."
In reply Stars cruised to victory with more than two overs to spare thanks to valuable knocks by Luke Wright (48), Rob Quiney (75) and Glenn Maxwell (58 not out) and a total of 3-191.
Paine tried different bowling options and legspinner Cameron Boyce (1-39) had a breakthrough with the wicket of Wright.
And although spinner Clive Rose (0-17) didn't get a scalp, he bowled tidily.
"Our quicks were getting smacked around a bit so we tried something different, it didn't work," Paine said.
Hurricanes meet Brisbane Heat at the Gabba on Friday.
