Departing Brisbane chairman Dennis Watt says the time is right to step aside, despite the frustration of coming close but falling short of another NRL premiership.
Watt announced on Friday he was stepping down from the role he took up in 2013, having been a Broncos board member since 2003.
He will remain at the club until the end of the year, with the search on to find his replacement.
While the Broncos have always fielded a competitive team, Watt has helped lift the club's support base and establish Brisbane as a leading commercial sporting brand in the country.
Earlier this year the club announced their biggest profit, while Watt was integral in securing three levels of government funding for the near-complete $25 million training and administration base.
With highly-regarded CEO Paul White reporting a full bill of health after a battle with a brain tumour, Watt said it was time for some fresh thinking at the club.
"It's a personally tough decision but the right thing for the organisation to allow renewal of the board, some fresh thinking and fresh ideas," he told AAP.
"Two years ago I set myself to support Paul through his brain tumour and oversee the new headquarters."
If he was to get picky, his only regret was not finishing with more silverware in the cabinet.
"It is about winning premierships and I'm feeling unfulfilled on that front given we've been in striking distance the last few seasons," Watt said.
"But I'm happy with where we're at."
Watt was at the club for the Broncos' 2006 premiership and is regarded as one of the game's sharper minds, often tasked with speaking on behalf of all NRL clubs in regards to league-wide issues.
He served as News Corp Australia's general manager of football when Melbourne Storm, then owned by the company, won the title in 2012.
"Winning premierships ticks the boxes," he said of his favourite memories in the job.
"Those were both very good memories, and it's also about seeing the players go on to higher honours and all the great community work the Broncos do."
Watt won't have a role at the Broncos next season but hopes to stay involved with the game.
