Brisbane star Matt Gillett has urged the NRL club to do all they can to stave off an approach from Melbourne and keep five-eighth Anthony Milford at Red Hill.

Milford was believed to be close to re-signing with the Broncos until attracting interest from the Storm as a replacement for Cooper Cronk.

In camp with the Australian side in Canberra, Gillett said his clubmate would have the support of the playing group no matter what decision he made.

But having lost Ben Hunt to St George in 2018, Gillett said it was important to tie down Milford, a match-winner who plays against club and England coach Wayne Bennett when he lines up for in a Test for Samoa on Saturday.

"I think at the end of the day, he'll do what's right for him. But from a Broncos point of view we've already lost Hunty," Gillett said.

"So I'm sure the club will be doing everything they can to keep Milford there. As a player, I hope he does stay."

Milford has been one of the Broncos' best over the opening nine rounds of the season, breaking a team-high 36 tackles and laying on eight tries - two of them in their last-start win over Penrith.

"For Anthony, he's in a good spot up there at the moment up at the Broncos. He's surrounded by family and friends. He fits in and well and he's playing good footy now for us," Gillett said.

"Obviously he didn't start too well (this year) and Anthony himself will tell you that but he's turned things around and he's working on his game."
