Talks between former Gold Coast flyer James Roberts and Brisbane are ready to step up a notch, as the Broncos prepare to table a formal offer.

Brisbane have moved one step closer to securing former Gold Coast centre James Roberts, with the club reportedly set to table an offer.

Roberts has been in discussions with the Broncos since the forged-contract debacle at the Titans, and his manager Jeremy Donovan, has suggested the talks are now ready to amp up.

"The Broncos would be a great fit for James but ultimately it's his decision," Donovan told News Corp Australia.

"The Broncos have indicated to us they will be making a formal offer."

Brisbane have been in the market for a centre since the retirement of captain Justin Hodges at the end of the 2015 season.

While Dale Copley would be an adequate replacement, the prospect of seeing Roberts link up with halves Ben Hunt and Anthony Milford could be too tantalising for the Broncos to resist.

Roberts last week gave the strongest hint yet he would link with the Broncos.

"It's all about lifestyle and being happy," he told News Corp Australia on Thursday.

"When I'm happy I play my best footy which is another reason why it's hard to leave the Gold Coast.

"Wayne Bennett's obviously a great coach. He is the best."

Roberts parted ways with Gold Coast after his signature in a representative bonus clause in his contract was found to be forged by a Titans staffer.

The contract then became null-and-void in the eyes of the NRL, and the two parties were unable to agree to new terms.

St George Illawarra and South Sydney are also believed to be in the market for Roberts.
