Brooks is new Vic parliamentary Speaker

Victoria has a new parliamentary Speaker after the former one resigned over an allowances scandal.

Victoria's new Speaker is Bundoora MP Colin Brooks.

Mr Brooks received more than half the votes in the Legislative Assembly to replace Telmo Languiller.

Mr Languiller resigned after it was revealed he claimed more than $37,000 in allowances for living more than 80km from Melbourne, despite representing a metropolitan electorate.

Bendigo West MP Maree Edwards has been elected the new deputy Speaker of the lower house.

As a regional MP, Ms Edwards claims the second residence allowance for living in Bendigo.

"I have done since I was elected in accordance with the rules," she told reporters on Tuesday.
