Brooks ready for more attacking Tigers

Luke Brooks had the best year of his career in 2018 but he knows the Wests Tigers attack he leads must improve in this year's NRL.

Luke Brooks is coming off the best season of his career but knows the Wests Tigers' attack must improve if they are to be a force in 2019.

In one of the great ironies of 2018, Brooks starred for the Tigers and was crowned the Dally M halfback of the year while commanding an attack that struggled for points.

The Tigers finished 2018 ranked 15th in the NRL for attack, with their average of 15.7 points per match the lowest in the joint-venture's history.

And while the side remain committed to keeping a similar defensive record to the one they did in 2018, Brooks said new coach Michael Maguire was encouraging a more open game plan with ball in hand this season.

"For us maybe it's coming up with a few new plays that no one has seen," Brooks told AAP.

"Last year we were ranked 15th in attack, it's something we want to improve.

"We've been working on our ball work from the start of pre-season, which is pretty different, usually it's just on skills and conditioning.

"We've got to change something. I think it's been good for him (Maguire) to come in and play a bit more open footy."

Regardless of the Tigers' attacking problems, Brooks' own performances couldn't be questioned last year.

He was back to his running best taking the defence on, busting through 55 tackles and making a career-high 11 line breaks.

At age 24 he looks ready to fulfil his potential, prompting a new four-year deal from the club and Maguire to claim it is now Brooks' team.

"I've definitely got a lot to improve on ... it's probably just getting my hands on the ball a bit more too," Brooks, who has been elevated to the leadership group, said.

"I think us playing a lot more attacking style will definitely help my game, because I like to play eyes-up footy and see what's in front of me.

"That's something Madge is encouraging for us."

Brooks' halves partner at least publicly remains a mystery headed into the club's round-one clash with Manly.

He played alongside Benji Marshall with Josh Reynolds injured for the majority of last year, but the two are vying for the No.6 jersey in 2019.

"Whoever it's going to be, it doesn't change my role," Brooks said.
