Brumbies mum on Lealiifano Super comeback

Christian Lealiifano could make his return to Super Rugby on Friday for the Brumbies against the Queensland Reds.

The Brumbies are remaining tight-lipped over co-captain Christian Lealiifano's Super Rugby comeback, delaying naming their reserves to face the Queensland Reds.

Lealiifano is pushing to make an incredible comeback for Friday night's match at Suncorp Stadium, less than a year after being diagnosed with leukaemia.

The 29-year-old playmaker has not been named in the starting XV, but there is speculation he will be included in the reserves when the Brumbies name their bench on Thursday.

Coach Stephen Larkham said a meeting on Wednesday would determine if Lealiifano is in the final team.

"He's done everything that he needs to do to get himself right for selection," Larkham said.

"His progression has been good and he's put himself in the mix for selection this weekend."

It comes 11 months after Lealiifano learned he had cancer and eight months after he underwent a bone marrow transplant in November before entering remission in February.

The 19-Test Wallaby played for the Brumbies in an exhibition match in Singapore last month and played club rugby in Canberra last week.

"He played a game of fourth-grade for Tuggeranong against Royals and I thought he played exceptionally well," Larkham said.

The Brumbies made one change to the starting line-up which demolished the Melbourne Rebels in their last match, with prop Scott Sio back in the team after recovering from a knee complaint to play for the Wallabies during the June break.

But all the selection intrigue is centred on the bench with Argentina halfback Tomas Cubelli also in line to play his first match since injuring his knee in a pre-season trial.

If veteran prop Ben Alexander is named among the reserves, he will get the chance to break club legend George Smith's Brumbies caps record by playing his 143rd Super Rugby match.

"This is the first time since I've been coach we've had all but two players available," Larkham said.

"We've got 37 in the squad, 35 are available for selection this weekend which is the perfect scenario."

Having a host of stars on the comeback trail is a massive boost for the Australian conference champions who have two regular season matches remaining before they host a quarter-final against either the Hurricanes or the Chiefs.

Brumbies: Tom Banks, Henry Speight, Tevita Kuridrani, Kyle Godwin, Aidan Toua, Wharenui Hawera, Joe Powell, Jordan Smiler, Chris Alcock, Scott Fardy, Sam Carter (capt), Rory Arnold, Allan Alaalatoa, Josh Mann-Rea, Scott Sio. Res: TBA.
