Buddy closing in on goalkicking top 10

Sydney forward Lance Franklin is less than 20 straight kicks away from breaking into the list of the top-10 goalkickers of all time.

His AFL side is winless, but Sydney's Lance Franklin is on course to break into the top-10 all-time goalkickers well before the end of the AFL season.

Franklin, the highest goalkicker among the present generation of players, last Saturday became the 12th man in VFL/AFL history to kick 800 goals.

One major against Carlton at the MCG on Saturday will push Franklin into outright 11th on the all-time list ahead of former Richmond hero Matthew Richardson.

If he kicks 18 more this season, Franklin will bump former Footscray and Fitzroy forward Bernie Quinlan out of the top 10.

He's unlikely to move any further up the list this year, with Peter McKenna's ninth-placed haul of 874 seemingly out of reach in 2017.

The second-highest goalkicker among current players, Nick Riewoldt, is also on the verge of a significant milestone.

The Saints veteran needs two goals to reach 700, though he hurt an ankle playing against Geelong on Sunday.

Franklin's former Hawthorn teammate Jarryd Roughead kicked his 500th career goal on the weekend.

Adelaide star Eddie Betts needs two goals to reach that mark and Richmond's Jack Riewoldt entered Monday's match against Melbourne requiring nine majors to bring up his 500.

Franklin was the last man to kick 100 goals in a season, tallying 113 in 2008 and the odds are against anyone reaching the magical three-digit mark this year.

Betts is the early frontrunner this season with 19 goals.

Two of the top three after the weekend were small forwards in Betts and the Giants' Toby Green (17), with Geelong spearhead Tom Hawkins (18) leading the way for the big men.

Contracted to Sydney for five more seasons after 2017, the 30-year-old Franklin has a chance of becoming the sixth player to kick 1000 or more goals provided he has a good run with injuries and his role doesn't change too much.
