More than 100 passengers have been removed from a plane preparing to leave the Canary Islands when they mutinied because a friend was told to pay extra for carry-on baggage, AAP reports.

The Spanish government is quoted in the La Provincia newspaper as saying police forced all 168 passengers to disembark and only allowed 64 to reboard.

Irish budget airline Ryanair, famed for its extra charges, confirmed the passengers became disruptive and refused to comply with crew instructions after a requirement to pay a gate bag fee for oversized luggage.
