Budget cuts hit NSW homeless clinic

A health clinic for the homeless in Sydney could be forced to close its doors after 40 years as a result of federal funding cuts, the opposition warns.

Sydney's most vulnerable residents will lose out if a health clinic for the homeless is forced to close as a result of federal funding cuts, the opposition says.

The Haymarket Foundation in Darlinghurst faces closure after 40 years as a result of losing $900,000 per year in federal funding.

Deputy Opposition Leader Tanya Plibersek called its patients "the human face" of the $60 billion in previously announced federal health cuts.

"If this service closes after 40 years of operation, who knows where these people will end up?" Ms Plibersek told reporters outside the clinic on Saturday.

The Haymarket Foundation provides health and welfare services to an estimated 1200 patients a year.

If it shuts, Ms Plibersek said, those patients could end up in hospital emergency departments or not seek medical treatment at all.

She warned health services around the country faced similar cuts, adding that Labor invested in healthcare in contrast to the Liberal Party.
