Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt says a record number of bulk-billed GP visits shows the government is committed to public healthcare.

New figures showing a record number of Australians are seeing a doctor for free underline the Turnbull government's commitment to Medicare, federal Health Minister Greg Hunt says.

The bulk billing rate increased to 85.8 per cent between July 2017 to March 2018.

There were more than 97.7 million GP visits, which was highest ever compared to previous corresponding periods.

"Our commitment to Medicare is rock solid and we will continue to ensure Australian patients are supported more than ever," Mr Hunt said on Wednesday.

"Although more Australians are benefiting from these record figures we must continue to drive down the cost of private health insurance and address out-of-pocket costs."
