Bulk of NAB cuts to hit Victoria-govt

Thousands of job cuts at National Australia Bank will probably hit Victoria the most because its headquarters is in Melbourne, the state's treasurer says.

Victoria's Treasurer Tim Pallas expects a "disproportionate number" of National Australia Bank job losses to hit his state.

The bank will slash a net 4000 jobs over the next three years as it increases automation to simplify its business.

"At the moment you would expect that a disproportionate number ... will come from Victoria because the headquarters are based here," Mr Pallas told reporters on Thursday.

"This is a three-year phasing period that they're proposing, so they should be able to manage this sensibly and I urge them to do so."
