Western Bulldogs premiership defender Joel Hamling has been traded to Fremantle after requesting a return to Western Australia.

Hamling, who played a key shutdown role on Sydney superstar Lance Franklin in the Bulldogs' AFL grand final win, will join the Dockers in exchange for pick 35, along with a swap of later picks.

The 23-year-old is the latest West Australian lured home by the Dockers during this year's trade period, joining former Hawks wingman Brad Hill and ex-Greater Western Sydney forward Cam McCarthy.
