The Western Bulldogs have opened the AFL trade period by knocking back Marcus Adams' request for a move to Brisbane.

While they wait to see whether Chad Wingard wants to leave Port Adelaide, the Bulldogs have made it clear that Adams is a required player.

The Bulldogs and Lions had preliminary talks on Sunday, the day before the trade period started.

"He (Adams) has indicated he wants a fresh start at Brisbane but we're keen to retain him," Bulldogs list manager Sam Power said.

"He's an important player for us. From our end he's got two more years on his contract and he's a required player.

"We're going to hold him to his contract."

The defender only played six senior games this season for a career total of 27.

It remains unclear whether Wingard will try to leave Port, with the Bulldogs waiting in the wings if he seeks a trade.

"The reality is, right now, nothing has compelled Chad to suggest he doesn't want to be at Port Adelaide, as it stands," said Power football manager Chris Davies.

"From our end, we'd only need to know if he wasn''t planning on being with us."

Power also said on Monday that they are close to re-signing midfielder Tom Liberatore and hope to trade for Richmond onballer Sam Lloyd.
