As new immigration minister, Tony Burke has been named to arguably the most uncomfortable seat in the new Rudd Government's ministry.

The controversy over boats carrying a rising number of asylum seekers into Australian waters has dominated political rhetoric much of the time over recent years.

Mr Burke says he now knows he was mistaken in his beliefs on the issue when he sat in opposition, and he says the Opposition today has it wrong, too.

SBS Radio's Ron Sutton sat down to talk with him about his views on Australia's asylum-seeker situation.
