Swan denies Manus was always a mistake

Wayne Swan denied the government made a mistake by sending asylum-seeker families to Manus Island.

Immigration Minister Tony Burke has arrived on Manus Island to visit the Australian-run immigration detention centre amid controversy over conditions there.

Mr Burke's arrival comes after a former employee of the centre alleged there was daily sexual abuse at the site.

The minister will meet with Manus Governor Charlie Benjamin before touring the facility.

Mr Burke said earlier this week he wanted to personally inspect the site after whistleblower and former Occupational Health and Safety worker Rod St George alleged on Tuesday night that acts of self harm and attempted suicide were occurring almost daily on Manus Island.

Media have been banned from entering Lombrum Naval Base where the temporary regional processing centre is held.

On Wednesday about 70 asylum seekers were flown off the island, believed to be bound for Australia.

Mr Burke is expected to talk to the media following his tour.
