Joe Burns' career-best innings in the second Test against Sri Lanka is the third-highest individual score in games between the two countries.
The opener's outstanding knock at Canberra's Manuka Oval ended on 180 after being bowled early on day two.
The Queenslander appeared set to become the first Australian to score a double century since Steve Smith's 239 against England in December 2017.
But Burns played onto his stumps off a ball from Sri Lankan quick Kasun Rajitha, adding eight runs to his overnight score.
The innings will go into the history books as the third highest individual total in an Australia-Sri Lanka Test match behind Michael Slater (219) and Kumar Sangakarra (192).
He passed other big names such as Steve Waugh, Aravinda de Silva and Justin Langer to get there.
The 29-year-old's previous best Test score was 170 in February 2016 against New Zealand.
But after that knock against the Black Caps, he was dropped three times and forced to fight his way back through the Sheffield Shield.
This knock was a reward for his hard work and perseverance during a turbulent three years.
Burns's innings and his record 308-run partnership with Travis Head (161) on day one have put Australia in an unbeatable position to ensure they secure their first Test series since the 2017-18 Ashes.
He has locked his place in the Australian squad for this year's Ashes tour after being in and out of the side in recent years.
He replaced Aaron Finch at the top of the order for the first Test at the Gabba.
It was his first appearance in the baggy green since the final Test of last year's South African tour immediately following the ball-tampering saga, where he acquitted himself well in difficult circumstances by scoring 42 in the second innings.
"It makes days like today where you get to kiss the badge on your helmet bloody good," Burns said after day one.
"It's just a message to yourself really knowing, when you're out of the team, if you work hard, day in and day out, performances like this are just around the corner."
