Test candidate Joe Burns has fizzled as Victoria took a narrow opening lead over Queensland in the Sheffield Shield.
Queensland won the toss and elected to bat at the MCG on Friday but were skittled for 137 before tea.
Burns (4) was clean-bowled by Scott Boland off just six balls as Chris Tremain (3-26) and Jon Holland (4-32) tore through the visitors.
Marcus Harris and Peter Handscomb put on a 130-run partnership for Victoria after tea, but the hosts lost three wickets in quick succession before stumps to finish with a lead of 16 runs at 5-153.
Glenn Maxwell, who was recalled after his controversial omission for Victoria's win over Tasmania, was unbeaten on six, with Cameron White (1) the other man at the crease.
After hitting 115 and 77 against Tasmania last week, Harris continued his outstanding form with a poised 75, while Handscomb added 60.
Harris reached his half-century with a six and looked set for triple figures but was caught at midwicket after mistiming an attempted pull shot off a short ball by Marnus Labuschagne.
Queensland were left to regret their decision to bat first almost immediately, with Charlie Hemphrey dismissed by Tremain on the second ball of the day.
The wicket of Burns, who was shaded by teammate Usman Khawaja for a spot in Australia's Test side, soon followed as Queensland slumped to 3-4 before Sam Heazlett's half-century restored some respectability.
Heazlett was assessed by medical staff after being struck on the helmet by a Boland bouncer early in his innings, but he was cleared to continue and top-scored with 51.
Boland (2-36) finished the job after lunch with a well-placed delivery that Heazlett edged to Maxwell at gully, while Holland swept through the tail.
Holland's wickets including the bizarre dismissal of Michael Neser (12), whose attempted sweep shot ricocheted off his pads and clipped the bottom edge of his bat before being caught by Wade.
The veteran left-arm spinner said he was confident the Bushrangers would be able to capitalise on the strong performance of pacemen Tremain and Boland.
"I think we were really on top of the game (until) the last 30 minutes and then a couple of late wickets sort of brought the game back a little bit," Holland said.
"We're definitely still in front. I think the first hour tomorrow's going to be pretty important. If we can get through that, I reckon Maxy and Whitey can build a really good partnership."
