Former Test opener Joe Burns will captain Queensland in their Sheffield Shield match against South Australia, with Chris Hartley sidelined by a broken finger.

Hartley had been in charge with regular skipper Usman Khawaja on tour with Australia in India, but broke his finger on Sunday while batting for University Of Queensland.

Burns, 27, is set to take the reins for the first time for the Bulls in the match starting on Saturday at Adelaide Oval.

Hartley's injury, which is expected to keep him out of action for three weeks, opens the door for Brisbane Heat BBL wicketkeeper James Peirson to make his Shield debut.

"It's bad luck for Harts, as he has been playing as well as ever, but hopefully the opportunity is there to consider him for the last game," Queensland selectors chief Justin Sternes said.

"We're fortunate to have good depth to call on in the Bulls' squad and Jimmy has been working hard for this.

"Joe Burns enjoys the challenge of captaincy and we're confident he will lead from the front for these important games over the next few weeks while Chris recovers."

Paceman Michael Neser has withdrawn with an ankle injury and will be replaced by Luke Feldman.

The Bulls are in fourth spot on the Shield ladder, marginally behind the Redbacks and NSW.

Queensland: Joe Burns (capt), Luke Feldman, Jason Floros, Peter Forrest, Cameron Gannon, Peter George, Sam Heazlett, Marnus Labuschagne, James Peirson, Mark Steketee, Sam Truloff, Jack Wildermuth (12th man to be named).
