Burnt van registered to missing men

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop has confirmed a burnt van is registered to one of the missing West Australian men, but human remains are not yet identified.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop has confirmed a burnt-out van located in the Sinaloa region of Mexico was registered to one of the two West Australian men missing since last week.

Golden Bay residents Dean Lucas and Adam Coleman have not been in contact with family or friends in more than a week, and were last sighted in the coastal town of Topolobampo on November 20 at 10pm.

The Department of Foreign Affairs has "very grave" concerns for the fate of the two men.

"A vehicle registered in the name of one of the West Australian men has been located," Ms Bishop told Nine Network on Tuesday.

"There are human remains and these are yet to be formally identified."

Ms Bishop disputed suggestions it would be difficult to determine exactly what occurred, saying Australian officials were working alongside law enforcement authorities in Sinaloa.

The region is one of Mexico's most dangerous and is home to the eponymous cartel led by drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman.

The girlfriends of Mr Lucas and Mr Coleman are travelling to the region with DNA samples to attempt to identify the two bodies reportedly found in the van.
