A makeshift bush shelter saved the lives of a father and son who were lost for two nights in the remote and chilly Tasmanian wilderness, police say.

John Ward, 42, and his 13-year-old son Stephen were reported missing on Tuesday after failing to return from a Lake Pedder camping trip.

Police on Thursday said the pair had been found safe and well by a walking search party near a track at Nine Mile Creek.

They were then flown out by helicopter.

"They'd built a small shelter and have been able to protect themselves somewhat from the heavy rain that we had," Senior Constable Chris Williams said on Thursday from Strathgordon, where the search party was based.

"They had the smarts to build something like that and keep themselves out of the weather and that is more than likely what saved their lives."

They also managed to find some food, most likely from a supplies pack, which are often left along the track by walkers, police said.

Stephen is said to be in good condition while Mr Ward is being treated for mild hypothermia.

Sen Const Williams said it was a special moment when Mrs Ward, who had travelled to Strathgordon, embraced her husband and son after three worrying days.

Mr Ward's sister Belinda was elated when rescuers announced her brother and nephew were safe.

"John Ward you are an idiot and a fool and stupid," Ms Ward wrote on Facebook.

"I'm so glad you and Stephen are found. And sucked in cause mum is at your house and your (sic) in trouble lol. Love ya mate."

The pair wrote in a log book at their campsite they were walking the Western Arthurs Traverse, which is described as "one of the most hazardous walks you can do in Tasmania".

Police on Wednesday found the Wards' tent, car and wet weather gear, and said they had grave concerns for their safety without protection from the elements.
