Bushfire burning near Katherine

An uncontrolled fire is burning near Katherine in the Top End and residents are urged to leave the area and find a safe place to shelter.

Residents of Katherine in the Northern Territory have been urged to find a safe place to shelter with an uncontrolled fire burning in the area.

NT Fire and Rescue Services said an uncontrolled fire was burning in the quarry area near the airfield which may threaten people and properties.

The fire is moving quickly in a westerly direction towards Cragborn Road.

Spot fires are likely ahead of the main fire and buildings could be damaged or destroyed.

Firefighters are attending.

"Survival should be your primary consideration," NT Fire and Rescue Services said in a statement.

"Fire authorities urge you to find a safe place to shelter. If your plan is to stay and defend a well-prepared property, ensure you are mentally and physically ready to do so, and your firefighting plan and equipment is in place and in working order.

Those visiting the area should seek a safe place to shelter or leave the area immediately.
