Bushfire moving towards Nth Qld community

Residents of the Laguna Quays community in north Queensland are being urged to adopt fire plans as a large bushfire moves closer.

Firefighters are battling a large, fast and out-of-control fire tearing through bushland in north Queensland.

The blaze was at Laguna Quays at 3.30pm on Friday and expected to impact areas of Kunapipi Road and Gibsons Creek Road in the following half hour.

"It will be very hot and windy and as the fire approaches it may become increasingly difficult to see, hear or breathe," a Queensland Fire and Emergency Services statement said.

"Residents are strongly advised to leave now if their plan is to do so or if they don't have a plan.

Embers from the firefront could spark spot fires as the blaze moves west, QFES said.

Residents were also advised that power, water and mobile phone services may be lost in the area for several hours.

Seven fire crews were working to contain the blaze.

But QFES warned firefighters would not be able to protect every home and residents should not expect one stationed at their door.

A large smoke haze was also affecting surrounding areas, including parts of the Bruce Highway, with motorists urged to take care.
